What Are Castellers?
The Castellers are teams of human tower builders, a tradition deeply rooted in Catalonia’s culture. These daring towers, some reaching up to 10 levels high, symbolize teamwork, strength, and balance.
🏛️ The History of Castellers
The tradition dates back to the 18th century in the town of Valls, near Tarragona. It evolved from a local folk dance, Ball de Valencians, into the competitive sport we see today.
🎭 How Do Castellers Build a Human Tower?
Building a castell (Catalan for "castle") follows strict coordination and practice. A tower consists of:
- 🦵 Pinya (Base) – A large group forms a solid foundation to support the tower.
- 🛠️ Tronc (Trunk) – The vertical levels with castellers standing on each other’s shoulders.
- 👦 Pom de Dalt (Top Structure) – Usually formed by children, who climb to the peak.
- 🖐️ Anxaneta (The Finisher) – The small child who reaches the top and raises their hand, completing the castell.
🕍 Where Can You See Castellers?
The best places to witness live Castellers performances include:
- 🎉 La Mercè Festival (Barcelona) – September, Plaça de Sant Jaume.
- 🏛️ Tarragona Castells Competition – Held every two years, one of the most spectacular events.
- 🏘️ Local Festivals in Towns Like Valls, Terrassa, and Vilafranca del Penedès.
🎭 Why Are Castellers Important to Catalan Identity?
Castellers represent Catalonia’s spirit of teamwork, courage, and perseverance. In 2010, UNESCO declared Castells a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
